Note
The variance in the appearance of the fish called ‘dulong’ and the magnitude of its
fishery in areas bordering the Verde Island Passage (VIP) has sent alarm signals to
local officials on the sustainability of the fishery. ‘Dulong’ is a general term for a
group of pelagic marine fish that is primarily characterized by their white to grey
slender body and small size. Clamour by local officials from areas bordering the
Verde Island Passage to identify species composition of ‘dulong’ catch had spurred
the idea to commence this study. Currently, efforts by the local government to
regulate the ‘dulong’ fishery lack a support base because of unrelenting issues
surrounding the fishery. A scientific study that would drive home fishing policies,
encourage and motivate various sectors of the fishing community to take a closer
look at problem areas of this fishery, namely, sustainability and conservation,
summarizes the scope of this project.
Through initial visits to market places and a fish landing port in San Juan, Batangas,
several samples of ‘dulong’ were gathered and prepared for analysis. One of the
crucial steps to promote understanding of the ‘dulong’ fishery issue is the
identification of species comprising the ‘dulong’ catch. This, therefore, is the main
focus of this study along with other congruent objectives that would lend support to
policies and recommendations that are expected to arise from this research study.
