Citation Description Asia: Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Geographic Range [top] Range Description: Chanda nama is known from India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Roberts (1994) has suggested that Chanda nama definitely occurs in the Indus, Ganges, Mahanadi, Krishna, and other river basins in India; however, records from Myanmar and Malaysia are probably erroneous. Countries occurrence: Native: Bangladesh; India; Nepal; Pakistan Number of Locations: 0 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: It is a very small fish, but is considered common within India (S.C. Dey pers. comm.). Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: ?Continuing decline of mature individuals: Unknown ?Population severely fragmented: No Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: Inhabits fresh and brackish waters, both in standing and running waters (Talwar and Jhingran 1991). It is a nocturnal or crepuscular, midwater fish. It spends most of its time in small shoals, under the cover of marginal roots (also mangrove) or floating vegetation (Daniels 2002). It breeds throughout the year and often a large number of eggs are found scattered on submerged marginal vegetation (Daniels 2002). It is also found (in Assam) in paddy fields when flooded. Systems: Freshwater Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: The species attains a length of 11 cm and has minor fishery importance in India (Talwar and Jhingran 1991, Daniels 2002) and in Bangladesh (Mazumder et al. 2008). These small, bony, fleshy fishes are sold in heaps along with other small fishes in the fish markets, especially for poorer income groups. As low-prized fishes they are preferred by many (Talwar and Jhingran 1991, Daniels 2002). This species could effectively be used in the control of guinea worms and also for malarial control (Talwar and Jhingran 1991, Chandra et al. 2008). It is captured as an ornamental fish throughout India. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species is widely distributed. The ornamental fish trade should be monitored. In some areas, it is sold in large quantities durring the monsoon. Numbers have been reported to have declined due to loss of wetlands (W. Vishwanath pers. comm.). Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: No conservation efforts are currently in place for the species. Species populations and the impact of fishery and collection for the ornamental trade require monitoring, Citation: Dahanukar, N. 2010. Chanda nama.
