Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: The species occurs from Myanmar through southern China as far east as Xiamen, and southward to Indonesia as far east as Sulawesi and the adjacent islands of Batjan and Sangihe (Adler et al. 1992). It appears to be absent from much of Laos and from northern Vietnam. Countries occurrence: Native: Brunei Darussalam; Cambodia; China; Indonesia; Lao Peoples Democratic Republic; Malaysia; Myanmar; Singapore; Thailand; Viet Nam Additional data: Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: This species is common throughout its range, where it occurs in a wide range of habitats, and may benefit from land conversion into open habitats and artificial wetlands. It appears to be suffering localized declines due to overharvesting in Tonle Sap, Cambodia, but the global population is more likely to be increasing than declining. Current Population Trend: Increasing Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: No Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: These secretive snakes thrive in wet, open, lowland habitats, include rice fields, gardens, road-side ditches, canals, ponds, and lakes. Systems: Terrestrial; Freshwater Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: The species is traded in reptile shops in southern Vietnam for medicinal purposes (Stuart 2004), and is used in snake wine in Vietnam (Somaweera and Somaweera 2010). The species is also traded at Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia as food for commercially-farmed crocodiles (Stuart et al. 2000, Brooks et al. 2007a, b). This species accounted for 0.02-5% of all aquatic snakes traded at Tonle Sap (Brooks et al. 2007a,b), and an estimated 0.39 +/- SE 0.03 individuals of this species per 1,000 square meters of gill net/day are captured at Tonle Sap (Brooks et al. 2007a). A large proportion of captured females of this species at Tonle Sap are sexually mature (Brooks et al. 2007a). Threats [top] Major Threat(s): The massive scale of the aquatic snake trade in Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia (Stuart et al. 2000) may threaten the persistence of that population. The species is perceived to be declining at Tonle Sap, although it was predicted to be the least susceptible to decline among the studied species of aquatic snakes at Tonle Sap, probably because it is the most terrestrial and therefore least susceptible to capture by gill nets (Brooks et al. 2007a). The species is subject to mortality from vehicles due to its abundance in road-side ditches. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: Taxonomic study is required to assess whether populations across this large geographic area are truly conspecific. Trade at Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia, should be curbed during the breeding season (Brooks et al. 2007a). Citation: Wogan, G., Vogel, G., Nguyen, T.Q. & Thy, N. 2012. Cylindrophis ruffus.
