JUSTIFICATION
Listed as Least Concern on the basis that, while this species is poorly-known and difficult to sample, it has a very wide range and is not thought to be subject to major threats.
RANGE DESCRIPTION
This species occurs in Viet Nam and China (Nguyen et al. 2009). In Viet Nam, it is known to be present in the northern mountains, lowlands and offshore islands, including the provinces of Cao Bang (Nguyen Binh), Lang Son, Vinh Phuc (Tam Dao), Bac Giang (Son Dong), Hai Phong (Cat Ba), Hai Duong (Chi Linh), Ninh Binh (Cuc Phuong) and Gia Lai (K Bang: Son Lang) (Nguyen et al. 2009). In China, it is present in Yizang and Jiangyong in Hunan Province, and Longshen and Da Yao Mountain in Guangxi Province. It occurs in areas between 100 to 900 m asl (Zhao et al. 1998). It has been reported from northern Guangdong, but its occurrence here has not been confirmed.
DESCRIPTION
This species is cryptic and hard to find, but it is not uncommon. The population trend is not known.
HABITAT AND ECOLOGY
This fossorial species inhabits pristine, moist lowland forests. It can also be encountered in secondary forest (Q.T. Nguyen pers. comm. 2017). In China it can be encountered both in primary forest and at the forest edge.
THREATS
Any threats to this species in China are not known. At least in Viet Nam it seems unlikely that there are any threats to this species (Q.T. Nguyen pers. comm. 2017).
USE AND TRADE
This species is not in trade.
CONSERVATION ACTIONS
This species was considered Least Concern in the 1998 China Red Data Book of Endangered Animals, applying the 1994 Categories and Criteria for a regional assessment (Zhao 1998). It is present in several protected areas in Vietnam, and Da Yao Mountain Protected Area, and Mang Mountain National Park in Yizang, Guangxi (B. Cai pers. comm. 2018). No direct conservation measures are needed. In China, this species is listed in the "List of Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Value Terrestrial Wild Animals under States Protection", under the protection of the "Law of the Peoples Republic of China on the Protection of Wildlife". |
