Population: D. cinerea is common and widespread throughout its natural range and it has been introduced to the West Indies during the 19th century - mainly to Cuba, Hispaniola, Guadeloupe, Marie-Galante, and Martinique. It invades fields, wastelands, road sides, and other disturbed areas.

Habitat and Ecology: D. cinerea is a shrub or small tree which occurs in a wide variety of habitats including natural forests and woodlands,bushland and thicket, agricultural areas, grasslands, riparian zones, ruderal, disturbed, scrub, shrublands, urban areas. It invades fields, wastelands, road sides, and other disturbed areas. Each plant produces a large number of seeds per year, almost all year long. Seeds survive for a long time in the soil. The growth of the plants is very fast. Young plants may produce seeds and adult plants can survive a very long time.

Use and Trade: Fruit and seeds from Dichrostachys cinerea are edible. Pods are very nutritious and eaten by game and stock.
The wood is very hard and durable, and often used as fencing posts and fuelwood. Roots, bark, leaves and fruit are used in traditional medicine.
