Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is reported from India (Karnataka). It is listed by Kress et al. as present in Myanmar (Bago) but this is thought to be an error (Sanjappa pers. comm. 2011). Countries occurrence: Native: India (Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Dadra-Nagar-Haveli, Daman, Delhi, Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Karnataka, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Pondicherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal); Myanmar (Myanmar (mainland)) Lower elevation limit (metres): 300 Upper elevation limit (metres): 800 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: This species can, occasionally, be locally common, but is considered to be generally rare. It is considered by Singh (1979) to be extremely rare. It was only reported again, in Karnataka, eight decades after its original collection (Singh 1988). Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ?Population severely fragmented: Yes Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This trailing herb is found amongst grasses in open forest. It is reported to occur in harvested Eleusine coracana ("Ragi") fields in Karnataka, India (Singh 1988). Systems: Terrestrial Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species is threatened by clearance of natural habitats for cultivation and pastureland. It is susceptible to overgrazing, a major threat in the habitats where it is found. Its habitat has also been affected by infrastructure developments, for example the type locality has now been lost to railway development (Sanjappa pers. comm. 2011). These threats are ongoing. More than 80 per cent of the Deccan thorn forests and thorn scrub forests (the ecoregions where this species is found) have been cleared, and the conservation status of these ecoregions was changed from endangered to critical because of the threats from human population to the remaining forest blocks (Rawat et al. 2001). Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There are no specific conservation measures in place for this species. It is uncertain whether it benefits from any existing protected areas, which are estimated to cover only about one per cent of the ecoregions where this species is found (Rawat et al. 2001). Further research is needed to establish its current population status and trends. Conservation areas may need to be extended or established to afford this species some protection and ex-situ conservation measures would be beneficial. It was not found in available lists of seed bank or botanic garden species. It is known to grow in inaccessible plateau areas which may afford it some protection (Sanjappa pers. comm. 2011) Citation: Chadburn, H. 2012. Eleiotis rottleri.
