Range Description: Has a large but discontinuous distribution. Is probably relatively common in much of its range. The species is known from the Moluccas, Kei Islands, Aru Islands, Papua New Guinea, The Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands. The species is also mentioned from the Philippines by Lieftinck (1974) but Hämäläinen and Müller (1997: Synopsis of the Philippine Odonata) consider A. similis a subspecies of A. insignis and do not give information on the distribution of subspecies.
