Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is native to south east Asia. It occurs in Peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and on Borneo. On Borneo the species is found in Kalimantan, Sabah and Sarawak. The species is found at elevations up to 1,000 m asl and it has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of over 960,000 km2. Countries occurrence: Native: Indonesia (Kalimantan); Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak); Singapore; Thailand Additional data: ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 1000 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: This species is scattered across Borneo (Ashton 2004) and is more common in forested tracts within Peninsular Malaysia (Chua et al. 2010). Overall population is declining. There has been between a 50 and 70% population reduction due to loss of habitat as a result of agricultural expansion in the last three generations (300 years). Population decline will continue into the future but the rate of decline is unknown. Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: Hopea pedicellata is a large tree, between 40 m (Ashton 2004) and 66 m tall (Slik 2009). The species grows in lowland mixed dipterocarp forests and on hills and ridges. Species habitat is currently declining in extent, area and quality. Systems: Terrestrial Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Generation Length (years): 100 Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: This species is used locally for its timber but this is not of commercial value. Resin can also be collected from the tree to make varnishes and torches (Slik 2009), this is also of low commercial value (Nooteboom et al. 2017). Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species is threatened by habitat loss caused by expanding agriculture, especially agro-industry in Borneo. The species is also at low risk of exploitation for logging and resin harvest. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: The species is not found in any ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). It is essential that ex situ collections of this species are produced. The species occurs in protected areas including many Forest Reserves in Peninsular Malaysia. Within Malaysia the species is assessed as Near Threatened. It is recommended that remaining habitat of the species is protected as habitat loss is the main threat to the species. Population size and decline should also be further investigated and monitored. Citation: Newman, M., Pooma, R. & Barstow, M. 2017. Hopea pedicellata.
