Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is native to Indochina. It is found in Cambodia (no confirmed records), Lao PDR and Thailand. It appears to be confined to the Mekong River valley. It has a strict altitudinal range from 150 to 300 m asl and it has an estimated extent occurrence (EOO) of over 50,000 km2. Countries occurrence: Native: Lao Peoples Democratic Republic; Thailand Additional data: ? Lower elevation limit (metres): 150 ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 300 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: This species is locally common but only contained within a few subpopulations. Overall population is decreasing. It is estimated the species has undergone a 50–70% population reduction in the last three generations (150 years) due to loss of habitat and exploitation. Decline is likely to continue into the future as these threats are still present but the rate of decline is currently unknown. Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This is a small tree species, often as tall as 15 m. It is found in lowland evergreen forest at low altitude. It is a perennial species. The species habitat is declining in area, extent and quality. Systems: Terrestrial Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Generation Length (years): 50 Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: The wood is used for fuel. The species can also be locally used as timber for village building (Oudomsack pers. comm. 2017) Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species is threatened by habitat loss. Much of the species native forest along the Mekong River has been extensively cleared for agricultural expansion. The species is also logged for fuelwood. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: This species is not reported from any ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). Ex situ collections of this species should be made. The species is found within protected areas; one subpopulation occurs naturally in the Dong Fa Hunm Botanical Garden and another occurs in the Pha Taem National Park. Within Laos PDR this species is assessed as Vulnerable due to geographical rarity, habitat restriction and the threat from regular use of the species and its habitat by people (Phongoudome et al. 2003). It is recommended that further population information (size and decline), habitat and ecology information be gathered. The species presence within Cambodia should be confirmed. Remaining habitat should also be protected. Research into an alternative fuel source should be conducted or the cultivated/enrichment stands for this purpose should be generated.
