The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2019: e.T136262A22244459. https://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2019-1.RLTS.T136262A22244459.en. Downloaded on 07 July 2021. Description JUSTIFICATION Listed as Data Deficient in view of continuing problems with its taxonomy as well as absence of recent information on its status and ecological requirements. RANGE DESCRIPTION The species ranges from the far south in Thailand (including Terutau Island) into Peninsular Malaysia, and the species is found on Borneo and in Indonesia including on Bunguran Island and on Sumatra (Jackson 2012, Phillipps and Phillipps 2016). DESCRIPTION The abundance and population size of this species are not known, however, Mull and Lim (1971) record this species as common in secondary forest, farms and orchards in the Malay Peninsula, but not present in primary forest. HABITAT AND ECOLOGY This nocturnal and arboreal species can inhabit a wide variety of habitats, from evergreen rainforest to cultivated land near villages, to lowland, and to mountainous areas. On Borneo it is found on Kinabalu at 1,370 - 1,500 m and in the Kelabit Highlands at 900-1,079 m (Phillipps and Phillipps 2016). Jentink’s Flying Squirrel feeds on fruits, seeds, leaves, and insects. Reproduction of Jentink’s Flying Squirrel appears variable and tied to fruiting of rainforest trees, with litters of 1–3 young. Jentink’s Flying Squirrel uses cavities in trees to nest. THREATS The habitat of this species is being deforested for timber, firewood and conversion to agricultural land. CONSERVATION ACTIONS This species probably occurs in a number of protected areas across its range. Further studies are needed into the taxonomy, distribution, abundance, reproduction and ecology of this species.
