Range Description: This species is distributed from islands of the western Indian Ocean (Seychelles, Reunion, Madagascar), the Red Sea and India east to Japan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia and Marshall Islands. There is also a record from Mauritius (MNHN). Records from Fiji are erroneous.

Population: This species is common in all parts of its range. For example, Ni et al. 2000, describe the species distribution on surface waters of Hong Kong, and data from the Pagbilao mangroves in the Philippines is provided by Ronnback et al. 1999.

Habitat and Ecology: This species occurs in brackish waters of estuaries, tidal creeks and mangroves, and can sometimes be found in upper streams (Masuda et al. 1984). This species can be found in large schools.
