Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is found in the Bay of Bengal east through the Straits of Malacca to the Gulf of Thailand and Indonesia (Heatwole 1999). It is recorded from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Taiwan (Mao and Chen 1980). Rasmussen, pers. comm. 2009). There is little population information available for this species. There have been no recent records from the east coast of India since 1977 (Murthy 1977; A Lobo. pers. comm. 2009). Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: No Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: It feeds on synodontidae and anguilliform fishes (Rasmussen 2001). This species lives in gravel and sandy muddy bottoms. Caught between 20 and 30 m in the Andaman Sea (A. Rasmussen pers. comm. 2009). There is one record of four young in a clutch (Whitaker and Captain 2004). Systems: Marine Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: This species is sometimes collected for skins in Viet Nam (McCarthy and Warrel 1991, A. Rasmussen pers. comm. 2009). Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species is captured as bycatch in trawls. There has been some habitat destruction in Thailand and Viet Nam from coastal development.
