Population: There is no information about the population status. However, this species is often cultivated in ponds along with other major carps (Talwar and Jhingran 1991). This species is common in West Bengal, and Bangladesh. Capture frequency of 1.9 % in Senkhi River, Arunachal Pradesh (Tamang et al. 2007).

Habitat and Ecology:
It inhabits rivers. This species breeds during monsoon season (July and August) and is a very prolific breeder (Khan 1934, Ahmad 1944, Joshi and Khanna 1980). It also breeds in paddy fields (S. Chaudhry pers. obs.).

Use and Trade: This carp which attains a length of 1.5 m and has good fishery value (Khan 1934). It is cultivated in ponds along with other carp species. Artificial breeding is successful through hypophysation (Talwar and Jhingran 1991).
