Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: The species is distributed only in northeast Viet Nam. Cao Bang and Lang Son provinces are the most important sites for this species. Some individuals of this species were recorded in Viet Nam 30 years ago but it has not been found again (V. Do pers. comm. 2011). Simpson (1914) listed the type locality as Bas Luc-Nam village of Van-Ien, Tonkin. Haas (1969) listed the distribution as Tonkin. Dang et al. (1980) lists this species from northern Viet Nam and other data is from Cao Bang and Lang Son provinces, Viet Nam. Countries occurrence: Native: Viet Nam Additional data: ? There is very little information about its population, as it has not been found for 30 years, it is inferred that the population is declining. Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This species inhabits streams and rivers in midlands and mountain areas. Systems: Freshwater Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: The species is used as food for humans, poultry, livestock and fish. Its shell is used in traditional Chinese medicine and handicrafts. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): Deforestation, mining and water pollution have deteriorated the quality of the habitat of this species as well as of its host fish species. Its proximity to the cities of Lang Son and Cao Bang is a source of water pollution affecting to this species. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: Surveys need to be conducted in Cao Bang and Lang Son provinces in northeast Viet Nam in order to obtain data on recent status of this species (populations and their distribution areas, host fishes, etc.).
