This plant is a large herb which can grow up to 2 m tall. It occurs in swamps, riverbanks, ditches, moist places in tropical and subtropical forests.

Use and Trade:
The young leaves are used as a vegetable. The rhizomes are used medicinally for treating tuberculosis of lymph nodes, swollen lymph nodes, stomach aches, cough, snake and insect bites, injuries, and rheumatism (Wu et al. 2010). It is also used against stomach ache, colics, rheumatism, and to treat sore throat. (Duke 1998)
