Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: Magnolia nitida is native to Myanmar and China where it occurs in Guangxi, Guizhou, Tibet and Yunnan. It is found between 1,400 and 1,500 m asl on Mt Damiao in northern Guangxi, Rongjiang in southeast Guizhou and at various mountain localities in Yunnan extending into Tibet and Myanmar. This species may also occur at higher elevations up to 2,500 m asl. Countries occurrence: Native: China (Guangxi, Guizhou, Tibet [or Xizang], Yunnan); Myanmar Additional data: ? Lower elevation limit (metres): 1400 ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 2500 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: The number of individuals is unknown. There is some concern that the androdioecious nature of the flowering system may be contributing to poor regeneration. A population decline of at least 30% over the past three generations has been estimated based on a decline in area and/or habitat and on levels of exploitation over three generations (FFI 2004). It is now reduced to subpopulations with a few scattered individuals (Li et al. 2012). Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: ? Continuing decline of mature individuals: Yes ? Extreme fluctuations: Unknown ? Population severely fragmented: Unknown Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: Magnolia nitida trees grow up to 30 metres tall in montane evergreen broad-leaved forests. Systems: Terrestrial Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Generation Length (years): 10-200,60 Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: Magnolia nitida provides a useful timber but has recently gained popularity as an ornamental tree, due to its form, evergreen leaves and aromatic flowers (Li et al. 2012). Threats [top] Major Threat(s): Magnolia nitida is threatened due to its timber exploitation, as well as general habitat loss, which has caused considerable population declines. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There have been some genetic work on Magnolia nitida with the view for improving conservation management. There are a couple of known ex situ collections, often under its synonym Parakmeria nitida. Citation: Khela, S. 2015. Magnolia nitida.
