Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This snake occurs in India, Myanmar and China (Whitaker and Captain 2004). In China, this species is found in Yunnan Province of China (Zhao 2006), and has also been recorded from western Guangxi recently (M. Lau pers. comm September 2011). Although it covers a wide range, this species is very localized and rarely recorded despite many surveys in areas of suitable habitat. It is consequently believed to have a rather restricted area of occupancy. It has been recorded between 900 and 1,786 m asl. Countries occurrence: Native: China (Guangxi, Yunnan); India (Meghalaya); Myanmar (Myanmar (mainland)) Lower elevation limit (metres): 900 Upper elevation limit (metres): 1786 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: No population information is currently available. It considered a very rare species in Myanmar (G. Wogan pers. comm. September 2011) Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ?Population severely fragmented: Unknown Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This nocturnal, oviparous snake is found near hill streams in highland areas, close to disturbed evergreen montane forest. It feeds on tadpoles and frogs (Whitaker and Captain 2004). Females contain 6 mature eggs (Zhao 2006). Systems: Terrestrial; Freshwater Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: There are no reports of this species being utilized. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): There is no information on major threats to this species. However, there is substantial timber trade between northern Myanmar, Assam and China and the forest habitat of this species is presumably being degraded or destroyed. Due to the highly localized occurrence of this snake and limited information on its distribution, it is unclear whether this represents a major threat. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: No conservation actions are currently known for this species. More information is needed on this species distribution, population status, natural history and threats. Citation: Lau, M. 2012. Amphiesma venningi.
