Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is listed as occurrring in Bhutan, northeast India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka (Wilmot-Dear 1987). It is also listed by Parkinson (1923) as a component of the forest flora of the Andaman Islands, however, this is not confimed by Wilmot-Dear (1987). The specimen from Sri Lanka has now been redetermined as M. atropurpurea (Thomas pers. comm. 2011). Countries occurrence: Native: Bangladesh; Bhutan; India (Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Assam, Bihar, Dadra-Nagar-Haveli, Daman, Delhi, Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Manipur, Meghalaya, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Mizoram, Nagaland, Nagaland, Orissa, Pondicherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal); Myanmar (Myanmar (mainland)) Additional data: ? Lower elevation limit (metres): 200 ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 1000 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: No detailed population information is available for this species. The most recent herbarium record found is from Bhutan and is dated 1982. Most records are from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Harida and Rao (1985) list it as frequent in Meghalaya, along the southern slopes of the Garro Hills. Kanjilal and Das (1938) list it as not very common in upper Assam. Parkinson (1923) suggests it is common in interior forests in south Andaman. Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This large woody climber is found in river valleys, forests and woodland margins. Stinging hairs on the fruits provide protection from predation (Sanjappa pers comm. 2011). Systems: Terrestrial Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species suffers from the loss and degradation of habitat associated with expanding human populations. In Bangladesh it is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss (Rezia Khatun 2009). Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There are no specific conservation measures in place for this species. In Bangladesh it is considered vulnerable, as a result of habitat loss, and protected area and ex situ conservation measures have been recommended here (Rezia Khatun, B.M. 2009). It may benefit from existing protected areas, for example it is listed as a species of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam. It was not found in available lists of seed bank or botanic garden species. Further surveys are recommended to establish the current population status and trends for this species. Also to establish its current distribution and habitat status. In view of some taxonomic confusion, further taxonomic research is recommended as, for example, existing specimens may be incorrectly labelled or determined. Citation: Chadburn, H. 2012.
