Scientific Name Author Tomlin, 1938 Country Distribution Malaysia
Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: Plectostoma retrovertens is known only from the limestone karst region of Bukit Cintamanis, Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia (Maassen 2001). Currently it is restricted to an area of 0.11 km² on edge of a quarried area, where most of the western part of this hill is gone due to the quarrying activities in the past and this remaining part of the hillside now covered by secondary vegetation. Countries occurrence: Native: Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia) Additional data: ? Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - km2: 4 ? Continuing decline in area of occupancy (AOO): No ? Population [top] Population: According to surveys by Berry (1961), live individuals were only found at the rock surface (Site A in Berry 1961). Berry (1962) reports finding several thousand individuals at Site A. A recent intensive survey for Plectostoma retrovertens was done at the type locality in August 2010 and May 2011. Site A is a rock surface smaller than 20 m². It appears that the vegetation cover and habitat structure of Site A has not changed compared with the assessment done by Berry (1962, 1964). However, only three live individuals were found during the survey in August 2010. Since the 2010 surveys the surrounding vegetation of Bukit Chintamanis was cleared in 2011. Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: ? Continuing decline of mature individuals: Yes Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This small gastropod was found within leaf litter on forest floor and on rock-faces within moist diptocarp forest on limestone hills. The remaining part of the hillside was covered by secondary vegetation, and as such little forest remained in 2007, clearance of the remaining forest in 2011 has led to decline in quality and extent of suitable habitat shading the rock faces. Systems: Terrestrial Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Generation Length (years): 1-5 Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: There is no known trade in this species. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): Plectostoma retrovertens originally was under threat as it occurred in an area with intensive quarrying (Clements 2009). The species was still present in 1995, with reasonable populations (Liew et al. 2014). Since the previous assessment (in 2007), although quarrying activities have now ceased on the small remaining area of karst, this endemic species was vulnerable to habitat disturbance within the small remaining forest fragment that contained the species. In 2011 this area of forest was cleared, and the continued presence of the species is now uncertain (Liew et al. 2014). Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: Restoration of some forest shading the rock area (Study site A) would be beneficial for the site, as the species may still remain in small fissures within the rock. Annual surveys to examine the study sites to check for the presence of the species would be beneficial. Citation: Thorseng, L. 2014. Plectostoma retrovertens.
