Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: Opisthostoma trapezium found in leaf litter in lowland dipterocarp forest floor on limestone.
Systems: Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): Opisthostoma trapezium lives in forest on karst which is currently being quarried (Price 2001) and this activity will eventually destroy the forest habitat for the resident populations. A secondary effect of the quarrying is the decrease in humidity within the forest, drying out the karst forest, which can also impact Opisthostoma trapezium causing population declines (Schilthuizen et al. 2005). Given that the region has greater mean annual increases in rates of limestone quarrying (5.7% per year; Clements et al. 2006) than other tropical regions (e.g., South America, Central America, Africa), this single locality endemic species faces a high extinction risk.
