Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: Plicofollis platystomus is a demersal, amphidromous species that has a depth range of 0–50 m. It is found in marine and estuarine waters and feeds mainly on invertebrates.
Systems: Marine
Movement patterns: Full Migrant
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: Plicofollis platystomus is reported to be one of the six most most commercially important catfishes within its region (Hafizuddin and Majumer 1995).
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): Plicofollis platystomus is reported to be one of the six most most commercially important catfishes within its region (Hafizuddin and Majumer 1995). It is marketed fresh (Jayaram 1984). It is harvested using a combination of bottom trawls, stake traps, shore seines, set bagnets, and hook and line. However, fishing is not considered to be a major threat to this species at present.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: There are no species-specififc conservation measures in place for Plicofollis platystomus, however its distribution may cover a number of marine protected area designations, including the Lampi Marine National Park off Myanmar.
Further research and monitoring of the population numbers and harvest levels of this species is needed to determine if it is likely to suffer significant population declines in the future.
