Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: This is an estuarine species whose adults inhabit mangrove estuaries, tidal creeks and lower reaches of freshwater streams (Allen et al. 2002). It is a euryhaline species (Donaldson and Myers 2002), usually found in brackish or freshwater reaches of river mouths and in mangroves (including Nypa forest).
Systems: Freshwater; Marine
Movement patterns: Full Migrant
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: There is no information on use or trade in this species.
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): This species may be affected by habitat loss and degradation via mangrove clearing and coastal development in some parts of its range. Recent declines in mangrove area in the last 10 years in Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea have been estimated at 8%, 16% and 14%, respectively (Polidoro et al. 2010). We infer a global decline in habitat of 13% over the entire range of this species.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: There are no species specific conservation measures in place for this species but its distribution directly overlaps several marine protected areas.
