Scientific Name Author (Sanborn, 1952) Country Distribution Philippines
Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: The species is endemic to Luzon island (Philippines). It is found widely across the Central Cordillera of northern Luzon (Abra, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, and Mountain provinces) (Musser 1982, Rabor 1955, Sanborn 1952). It has been recorded from approximately 925-2,200 m asl (Rickart et al. 2011, Heaney et al. 2011). Further surveying is required to determine its distribution at lower and middle elevations in Abra, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur (Heaney et al. 2011). Countries occurrence: Native: Philippines Additional data: ? Lower elevation limit (metres): 1000 ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 2500 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: The population status of this species is unknown. A study of small mammals on the Balbalasang gradient showed that local small mammal communities were dominated by two species, Apomys abrae and A. datae which together accounted for nearly 75% of the total number of animals captured along the entire gradient (Rickart et al. 2011). Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: No Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: The species has been found in habitats ranging from mixed grass and shrubs underneath pines through to dense montane rain forest (Heaney et al. 2011). Its diet is though to consist of seeds and other plant matter and it was trapped in the nocturnal/crepuscular period (Rickart et al. 2011). Trapping showed that the species was more commonly trapped on the ground, indicating that this particular species rarely climbs (Rickart et al. 2011). Apomys abrae was strongly associated with intermediate disturbance levels and only rarely encountered in intact forest and not recorded in the most severely disturbed habitats (Rickart et al. 2011). Systems: Terrestrial Threats [top] Major Threat(s): Nothing is known regarding the threats to this species, though it has been found in areas with some disturbance levels and only rarely encountered in intact forest and not recorded in severely disturbed habitats (Rickart et al. 2011). Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: The species has been trapped in the Balbalasang-Balbalan National Park (Rickart et al. 2011) and in Mount Data National Park (Rickart et al. 2011). Further studies are needed into the distribution, abundance, natural history and threats to this species. Citation: Kennerley, R. 2016. Apomys abrae.
