Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is distributed in the Western Indian Ocean, including the coasts of Somalia, Pakistan, southwest and south India, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Mannar (Holthuis 1991), and along the coast of Myanmar (Nakken and Aung 1980). Countries occurrence: Native: India; Myanmar; Oman; Pakistan; Somalia; Sri Lanka; Yemen FAO Marine Fishing Areas: Native: Indian Ocean – western; Indian Ocean – eastern Additional data: ? Lower depth limit (metres): 1300 ? Upper depth limit (metres): 180 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: There is no population information available for this species. Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: No Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This species occurs at depths between 180-1,300 metres, but is most commonly found between 180-300 metres; and is found on substrates of coarse sand, hard muds and shells (Holthuis 1991). This species was found in the Chinnamuttom region of India both during monsoons and post monsoons (Vijayanand et al. 2007). Systems: Marine Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: This species was commercially fished between 1974 and 1977 off the east coast of Somalia (Holthuis 1991). This species is fished at depths of 150-400 m by trawlers along the entire coast of Somalia; mainly by foreign vessels which submit no catch or effort data (Fielding and Mann, 1999). Off the Gulf of Aden, experimental trawling produced catches of 10-129 kg/ hour (Holthuis 1991). Rich fishery grounds were found off southwest India; the annual sustainable yield in this area was estimated at 6,700 tons and was carried out by deep-sea trawlers (Holthuis 1991). Vijayanand et al. (2007) states that lobster stocks in the Kanyakumani district along the south east coast of India, are depleted in the natural habitat due to the indiscriminate exploitation of the fishery in the area of adult lobsters with juvenile and berried female lobsters. The management of this lobster fisheries is restricted by the lack of knowledge about the relationship of adult stock and recruitment along this area.. Furthermore, this species was considered to be commercially acceptable by a study by Nakken and Aung (1980) in Myanmar, in which the species was found to have an average catch (kg per hour) at varying depths, in bottom trawls off the Delta coast at 6 kg (251-350 m); off the Tenasserim coast of 6 kg (151-250 m), 13 kg (251-350 m) and 4 kg (351-500 m); and of the whole of the Myanmar coast of 4 kg (151-250 m), 10 kg (251-350 m) and 3 kg (351-500 m). Additionally specimens of deep-sea lobster were found to vary considerably in length, with a number of the largest lobsters (ovigerous females) measuring greater than 13 cm (Nakken and Aung 1980). Pe et al. (2009) considers this species to be a potential species for offshore fisheries of Myanmar, after findings of a catch per unit fffort of 46.7 (kg/hr) (fishing hours 161.5; total catch 7545.0 kg) from species-wise catches taken between 24.6.1990 to 18.7.1990). An average catch from the Ayeyarwady Delta area of 6 kg per hour (at a depth of 251-350 m) and from the Tanintharyi coast 6 kg (151-250 m) and 13 kg (251-350 m) per hour (Pe et al. 2009). Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species is fished commercially and on a subsistence level within parts of its range, however, this is not believed to impacting upon the global population. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There are no species-specific conservation measures in place for this species. Citation: Cockcroft, A., MacDiarmid, A. & Butler, M. 2011.
