Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: A steno-endemic species known so far only from limestone areas in Saraburi, central Thailand. It occurs at one location with an extent of occurrence of 20 km². Countries occurrence: Native: Thailand Additional data: ? Number of Locations: 1 ? Lower elevation limit (metres): 100 ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 200 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: While locally common, the area of distribution is very limited and the flowering stalks are collected by locals during the Buddhist Lent ceremony as offerings. The species propagates from seed, so over-collection of inflorescences with possible habitat destruction may cause population declines. Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: Occurs in open deciduous forests, growing on limestone derived soil and in grassland on limestone slopes (Larsen and Saksuwan Larsen 2006). Systems: Terrestrial Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: The flowering stalks are collected by locals during the Buddhist Lent ceremony and sold to temple visitors. Recently it has also started to be cultivated in Thailand and exported to Europe. There are thousands of plants growing in Phu Kae Botanical Garden. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): Habitat degradation and over-collection of flowering stems from the wild populations are the main threats. The karst limestone is being quarried for cement production. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: The area is not under any protection at present. Citation: Leong-Skornickova, J., Tran, H.D., Newman, M., Lamxay, V. & Bouamanivong, S. 2012.
