Scientific Name Author M.Kato & Koi Country Distribution Thailand
Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is endemic to Thailand. It has been recorded only at one site in Chanthaburi province in southeastern Thailand. The known site covers an area of less than 500 m2. Countries occurrence: Native: Thailand Additional data: ? Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - km2: 0.0005 ? Number of Locations: 2 ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 150 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: Only one part of the population is able to flower during the dry season as a nearby dam is affecting the natural river flow cycle. Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: ? Continuing decline of mature individuals: Yes Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: The species only occurs attached to rocky substrates in river rapids and waterfalls. These plants grow submerged during the rainy season and are exposed and flower in the dry season when the water level decreases. Systems: Freshwater Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: No information available. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): There is a small dam downstream but very close to the only known population. As a result, the lower part of this population, the one nearer to the dam, is permanently submerged and the upper part is seasonally submerged. Hence only the population that benefits from natural flow alteration is able to flower during the dry season as this species needs to be exposed to be able flower during the dry season (M. Kato pers. comm. 2011). This has an important influence on the population and also affects the rivers natural cycle which is vital for the species survival. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: The species has been recorded in river rapids near a village and above a dam. More research is needed to determine ecology, population trends and possible threats to this species. Citation: Juffe Bignoli, D. 2011. Terniopsis chanthaburiensis.
