Range Description: This species is known from the lower reaches of river systems and coastal areas throughout the Indian subcontinent eastwards to the lower reaches and delta of the Irrawaddy River.

Population: Although Patra et al. (2005) report a mean decline of 32.6% in catch for this species in the Sundarbans (Ganges-Brahmaputra estuary) for the period 1960-2000 and Mishra et al. (2009) report a mean decline per decade of 28.4%, and 57% average each decade between 1980 and 2000, in catch for this species in southwestern Bengal for a similar period, there is insufficient data from other areas where this species is naturally distributed.
