Deliberately naturalised on the Chatham Islands by Maori.

Coastal to lowland in fertile wetlands, on the margins of ponds, lakes, slow flowing streams, and rivers. Less frequently found on the margins of low moor bogs. Occasionally found in muddy ground within industrial areas. Lakes, ponds, channels, swamps, slow-moving rivers (efloras 2011).

Use and Trade: The whole plant has many edible parts: flowers, leaves, pollen, root, seed, and stem. It also has medicinal uses such as astringent, diuretic, sedative, and used to treat bruises, dysentery, and fever. It is also a source of biomass and fibre. It is used for insulation, thatching, weaving, stuffing etc. It tolerates lead and is used to accumulate lead in metal mines, as well as other pollution control applications.
