Population [top]
Population: This species is locally abundant in many areas (e.g., Palau: R. Myers pers. comm. 2015). From 2008 through 2014, regional estimates of the density of Z. cornutus ranged from 7.8-22.4/ha over hard bottoms to 30 m depth in Pacific coral reef areas surveyed by NOAA (NOAA unpublished data as described in Heenan et al. 2014). The highest density was in the North Western Hawaiian Islands region (4.5-42.76.5/ha) as compared to the lowest, in the American Samoa Islands region (0-15 individuals). NOAA survey data (2008-2014) from Timor Leste was 16/ha and 10.5/ha from Fiji (S. Jupiter, unpublished data). Mean density from the Federated States of Micronesia ranged from 0.2/ha (Yap) to 20.4/ha (Guam); however, this species was not observed in any of the other sites (B. Taylor, unpublished data). Mean density from Raja Ampat was 16.7/ha (A. Green, unpublished data). This species is common in the Solomon Islands (Allen 2006). Surveys around the populous islands showed a mean density of 27.4/ha and surveys around the remote islands showed a mean density of 39.1/ha (A. Green, unpublished data).
Current Population Trend: Stable
Additional data:
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: Zanclus cornutus inhabit coastal and offshore rocky and coral reefs, and lagoons and is often found in pairs (Myers 1991, Allen and Erdmann 2012). This species is a specialist feeder, feeding primarily on encrusting sponges (Dorenbosch et al. 2005). The maximum recorded length for this species is 23 cm (Anderson and Hafiz 1987).
Systems: Marine
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: This species is used in the aquarium trade (Tissot and Hallacher 2003, Lecchini et al. 2006), but does not usually do well in tanks (Myers 1991).
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): There are no known major threats.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: There are no species specific conservation efforts in place for Z. cornutus. Its range overlaps with a number of marine protected areas (IUCN and UNEP 2014).
