Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: Bathycongrus retrotinctus has been recorded from Japan and the Philippines. This species is thought to be present in the Sea of Japan, due to two specimens being found in the Tokyo fish market (Jordon and Synder 1901). However, no live specimens of B. retrotinctus have been collected from this region and the market stall records date back to over a hundred years ago. The six specimens collected from the Philippines were initially misidentified as Bathycongrus megalops, before later being reassessed as B. retrotinctus (Castle and Smith 1999). Population [top] Population: There is no population information available for Bathycongrus retrotinctus. Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: No Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: Bathycongrus retrotinctus is a bathydemersal conger eel. In the Philippines, this species has been collected at a depth range of 150–450 m. Systems: Marine Threats [top] Major Threat(s): It is not known whether Bathycongrus retrotinctus is being impacted by any major threat processes. The presence of specimens in a Tokyo fish market indicates that B. retrotinctus may be harvested for human consumption or taken as by-catch; however reference to the Tokyo fish market specimens dates back to 1901, so it is not known if this species is taken in fisheries today. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There are no species-specific conservation measures in place for Bathycongrus retrotinctus. Further research is needed on distribution, abundance, and potential threats to this species. Citation: Acero, A., Murdy, E. & Smith, D. 2010. Bathycongrus retrotinctus.
