Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species is recorded from Palawan Island in the Philippines and from Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia. Merrill (1923) listed this species from the Philippines Mindanao Island (Zamboanga), however, Hou et al. (1996) now have this species as Palawan only. Countries occurrence: Native: Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak); Philippines Additional data: ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 1500 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: No population data is available for this species. A specimen collected from the Mount Kinabalu area of Sabah in 1961 has the label note common climber. The most recent herbarium specimen found is dated 1994. Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: Yes Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This shrubby climber is reported from lowland forests in Palawan and mountain forests in Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak), up to 1,500 m on Mount Kinabalu. Systems: Terrestrial Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: A specimen in Kew herbarium (Soibeh 780) from Sabah, has a label with use given as construction. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): The forest habitat of this species suffers from loss and degradation, particularly from logging and clearance for shifting cultivation and plantations. It is estimated that more than half of the Borneo lowland rainforest has been cleared or degraded (Loucks 2001), there has been much logging and large scale plantation development for oil palm, rubber and timber. In Sarawak most of the remaining primary forest, not in mountainous areas, has been given out for logging concessions (Primack 1991). The Hose mountain area, Sarawak, where this species has been recorded, is known to have been subject to logging (Dow and Reels 2010). Beaman (2005) notes that, with settlement established on all sides, Mount Kinabulu has become a biological island, partly protected by Park boundaries. He identifies potential threats to the integrity of the Kinabalu flora and Park as agriculture (even within the park), illegal logging and tourist pressures. He also notes that forest fires have recently destroyed 2,500 ha and that mining is a potential future threat. Palawan had an estimated 7,410 km² (54 per cent) of total forest remaining in 2001, with logging and shifting cultivation cited as primary forces of habitat conversion (Morrison 2001). Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There are no specific conservation measures in place for this species. The Palawan Biosphere Reserve, created in 1991, includes the entire Province of Palawan, in the Philippines. It covers around 14,000 km² and is likely to benefit this species. However, the reserve areas on the island can suffer from boundary and management problems (Sandalo and Baltazar 1997). The heart of Borneo initiative (WWF 2010), if fully implemented, is also likely to conserve the habitat in the area where this species is found in Sabah. The Kinabalu National Park is very close to specimen localities and it seems likely that it may occur within this protected area. The other known locality, the Hose Mountain area, is proposed as a National Park. It was not found in available lists of seed bank or botanic garden species. Research is recommended to establish the current population, habitat status and distribution of this species. Citation: Chadburn, H. 2012. Bauhinia merrilliana.
