Population: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as scarce to very common (del Hoyo et al. 2005), while national population sizes have been estimated at c.100-10,000 breeding pairs in China and (for the subspecies goodfellowi) c.10,000-100,000 breeding pairs in Taiwan (Brazil 2009).
