Citation Description Geographic Range [top] Range Description: This species has been found in the southern Annam Highlands in southern Vietnam, eastern Cambodia, and southeastern Thailand (Stuart et al. 2006, Nguyen et al. 2009, Chan-ard et al. 2015). In Vietnam, it has been recorded from the provinces of Gia Lai (K Bang: Son Lang, Buon Luoi), Dak Lak and Lam Dong (Da Lat) (Nguyen et al. 2009), Binh Thuan (Ta Kou Nature Reserve) (N.S. Nguyen, unpubl. data) and Dong Nai (Vassilieva et al. 2016). The only confirmed Cambodian locality is in Pichrada District, Mondolkiri Province, at 600 m asl. (Smith 1935, Stuart et al. 2006). Although the species type locality is "Cambodia", based on coordinates provided by Ashburton in Mohout (1864) the type locality appears to lie in Binh Phuoc Province in modern Vietnam following a subsequent change in national boundaries, around 25 km from the Cambodian border (B. Stuart pers. comm. 2017). In Thailand, it has only been recorded in Khao Sao Doi Wildlife Sanctuary in the Chanthaburi Province (Nguyen et al. 2009, Chan-ard et al. 2015). This subpopulation requires additional taxonomic study and may represent a different species, as there are no records from the area between Khao Sao Doi and far eastern Cambodia. Countries occurrence: Native: Cambodia; Thailand; Viet Nam Additional data: Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: This is an uncommon or rare species. There is little information available on the population trend. Current Population Trend: Unknown Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: Yes Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: This arboreal species is usually solitary (Chan-ard et al. 2015). In Cambodia, it has been found in southeastern monsoonal evergreen forest, high up in the shrubs and trees, particularly on the tips of outstretched branches, overhanging waterways (Chan-ard et al. 2015), and in deciduous dipterocarp forest with grassy understory, where it has been recorded at dusk on a tree branch 3.5 m above the ground (Stuart et al. 2006). This species inhabits the southern Annamite montane rainforest in Vietnam (Stuart and Hallermann 2010). It is not known if it can persist in secondary or disturbed forest. Systems: Terrestrial Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: This species is not used. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): This species habitat is threatened by habitat loss caused by agricultural conversion (cassava) and expansion of industrial-scale plantations (principally rubber and coffee) (Q.T. Nguyen pers. comm. 2017). Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: There are no known species-specific conservation measures in place for this species; however, in places its distribution coincides with protected areas, for example the Phnom Nam Lyr Wildife Sanctuary in Cambodia. Further research on the population status, range, biology and ecology, and threats to this species is suggested. The establishment and management of new protected areas is suggested to provide further safeguards for this species. There is a need for further taxonomic study of the Thai subpopulation.
