Range Description: This is an exteremely widely distributed species. It is native in much of South East Asia, China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and Australia. It is also introduced in coastal west Africa and is considered a weed of open grasslands on Pacific islands.

Population: This is a common and widespread species with a large inferred population. The most recent herbarium record found was collected in 2004.

Habitat and Ecology: This trailing herb or climbing species may be annual or perennial. It occurs in open grassland, dry scrub and deciduous monsoon forests. It also occurs on ridges between cultivated fields and along roadsides.

Use and Trade: This species is useful as a legume member of pasture vegetation and as a green manure. It is also reported to have been used in the treatment of diarrhoea in cattle (van der Maesen 1985) and as a traditional Chinese medicine for improving digestion and diuresis (Zhou 2002)

Major Threat(s): This is a common and widespread species with no major threats.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: No specific in situ conservation measures are in place or, at present, needed for this common and widespread species. It has been recorded in protected areas, such as the Ritigala Natural Reserve in Sri Lanka. It is maintained as a genetic resource at ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics) in India, in the Pigeon Pea collection and seed has been collected by the Millennium Seedbank Project Partnership. It is also recorded from botanic gardens such as the State Botanical Garden in Orissa.
