The species is principally restricted to limestone karst areas of these provinces. Calocedrus rupestris has also recently been reported from Guangxi in China (Nong et al. 2011). It may occur in adjoining provinces of Lao PDR that share the same limestone geological formations (S?n La/Houaphan, Qu?ng Bình/Khammouan and Savannakhet). Countries occurrence: Native: China (Guangxi); Viet Nam Additional data: ? Continuing decline in number of locations: Yes ? Lower elevation limit (metres): 600 ? Upper elevation limit (metres): 1600 Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range. Population [top] Population: This species is rare in most provinces although it may be locally common in specific localities. The total subpopulation in Viet Nam is estimated to be less than 2,500 mature individuals. In Guangxi, the subpopulation is estimated to be about 2,100 individuals. Seedlings and regeneration of Calocedrus rupestris is rare and hence recruitment is poor. Current Population Trend: Decreasing Additional data: ? Population severely fragmented: Yes Habitat and Ecology [top] Habitat and Ecology: The species grows on rocky limestone ridges and steep slopes. Associated conifers vary according to location: Pseudotsuga sinensis, Keteleeria and Pinus sp. in the northern localities; Dacrycarpus imbricatus and Dacrydium elatum in the southern localities (Qu?ng Bình). Systems: Terrestrial Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes Use and Trade [top] Use and Trade: This species is frequently exploited for its valuable timber which may be used for construction, furniture and fine crafts. Resin is also used. Threats [top] Major Threat(s): Calocedrus rupestris is threatened throughout its range by selective logging for timber, general deforestation and forest degradation. Conservation Actions [top] Conservation Actions: The species has been recorded from some protected areas: Phong Nha-K? Bàng National Park (Qu?ng Bình) and Bat Dai Son Nature Reserve (H? Giang).
